A Sharp Spear Point

A Sharp Spear Point is the sequel to A Spear in Flight, this novel continues the compelling story of Thomasyn, Bethany, and Jon after they completed their training as Spears who protect it. Three Spears—fighters barely beyond childhood, impeccably trained in fighting, moral values, and endurance, the defenders of the people—rise to battle enemies who threaten to destroy lives and the political structure holding their Realm together.

By Douglas Owen - A Goodreads Author

I wrote this novel during the NaNoWriMo challenge of 2013 as the second book of the Spear series. It involved switching from short excerpts from the children's lives to a running storyline with multiple plot points. This became challenging and rewarding as the young adults continued on their journey through life.

Though the work is listed as a Young Adult fantasy, and many adults enjoy the story due to the multiple threads. It plays out more like a movie than a regular novel. And as you read it, keep in mind it is suggested for ages 14 and above.

Rated Parental Guidance due to adult themes and realistic violence.

The head rolled across the cold stone floor and stopped at the feet of a Hobs. The acolyte backed away, eyes wide with terror; the decapitated head stared up at nothing, the fire of torches reflecting in its lifeless gaze.

The Queen of the Hobs dropped the bloodied sword at the foot of the dais, climbed the steps to her throne and sat. The bones that made up her mighty perch were cold, but she didn’t want the royal vizier to see her discomfort. She jutted her pointed chin and watched the entire court hold their breath. Over fifty Hobs lifted their heads to watch her as guards dragged the decapitated body of the senior Seer away.

“Leave it!” the queen growled when a guard bent to pick up the head. The Hobs guard straightened and followed the body to the end of the long hall. Their footfalls echoed in the silence of the vaulted chamber.

Reviews:Vivian Delchamps wrote:

Bethany, Jon, and Thomasyn are impressive and complex characters and, young though they are, their skill, courage, and wisdom give the story its vitality. Jon's growing mercilessness spawns the trepidation of his friends; the unsettling nature of his rising psychosis is felt at every turn. After the Spears discover the unrest of the spiritual, hard-working dwarfs and encounter a village under the control of trolls, they ultimately must face this menace that grows within their triad. Brilliantly executed, this novel unleashes dangers and discoveries powerfully woven together and irrefutably original.
